Yes, we know this is not Cuba and no, you are not on the wrong web site. For many years those who have travelled with us to Cuba have asked where else do we do “our style” of tours meaning balancing history, nature, tourist attractions, and learning about the culture during visits with the local people at their work places, schools, and homes – and doing so at an enjoyable pace.

We slow it down staying 2 and 3 nights in each locale allowing you to unwind, unpack and get a true sense of the area. We also include 2 nights at a non-commercial beach area where small local businesses prevail and there isn’t a MacDonald’s in sight.

We have designed this tour to do all of the above. Visit a recently excavated historical monument, trek on trails through dense jungle, see rain and cloud forests, visit a non-commercial indigenous village, and see the incredible wildlife. Visit a private farm, a pineapple plantation, the world’s only Sloth Sanctuary, and a butterfly garden. Learn to cook “Tico” style, swim in natural hot springs, and view active volcanoes up close. And that’s just a sample of what to expect.

A small group size, built in free time and a variety of styles of accommodation in beautiful settings add to the experience.

Fully Escorted: Each group is lead by an expert Costa Rican guide, and a Canadian Tour Leader - both who thoroughly enjoy what they do.

San José – Gran Hotel Costa Rica (1 night)

Day 1 (D)

Upon arrival at San José airport you will be met and transferred to the Gran Hotel – an architectural jewel conveniently located in San Jose’s downtown area. Get acquainted with your fellow travellers at a Welcome Dinner this evening.

Turrialba – Guayabo Lodge (2 nights)

Day 2 (B, D)

Today we leave the city for the agricultural area of Turrialba. We will pass through one of the most important agricultural regions where most of the potato, cabbage, carrots and dairy goods are produced before arriving at Irazú Volcano National Park. The Irazú Volcano is an active volcano situated in the Central Mountain Range, close to the city of Cartago. This volcano is the highest one in Costa Rica (11,259 feet/3.432 meters). Its last eruption was in 1965 and since then it has been dormant although frequent earthquakes indicate that there is still activity beneath the earth’s surface.

A walk along the crater will allow us to see four additional craters and, if the weather permits, a spectacular view of the Pacific and Caribbean plains.

At the Guayabo Lodge, where we will spend the next two nights, a “one class cooking program” has been arranged especially for our group! You will learn unique techniques and traditional recipes that have been passed on from mother to daughter for generations. You will also learn new Tico recipes and the secrets of using the tropical ingredients, fruits and vegetables that are part of the Costa Rican Tropical Cuisine!

Our intimate lodge is located 1500 meters above sea level in a lush cloud forest environment. Enjoy the gracious hospitality at what some describe as an “enchanted place”.

Day 3 (B, L, D)

Following breakfast we travel to the Guayabo National Monument where you will learn about indigenous settlements and social organization first hand by walking through a recently discovered indigenous city. The ancient ruins of Guayabo National Monument, hidden in a rainforest, showcase a mysterious "lost city" that was home to about 10,000 people from 1,000 B.C. until the arrival of Columbus off the Caribbean coast in 1502.

Our next stop is at the Hacienda Tayutic. The site features a colonial log house, a reconstructed 15th century church lit by stained-glass windows, gardens; an orchid greenhouse, an herb garden, and the unexplained mystery of pre-Colombian stone spheres.

We will learn about the agricultural aspects of growing coffee, macadamia nuts and sugar cane. And there is nothing better than ending the visit with a fresh cup of steamed coffee!

Tortuguero National Park – Pachira Lodge (2 nights)

Day 4 (B, L, D)
Tortuguero National Park is located on the Caribbean coast and accessible only by a 1 ½ hour boat ride. Sheltering more than 300 bird species including toucans, 57 species of amphibians, 111 reptiles and 60 mammal species including monkeys, jaguars and manatees, it’s truly one of the most exotic and beautiful regions of Costa Rica!
After lunch we tour the town of Tortuguero which is reached only by water taxis.

Day 5 (B, L, D)
This morning on a canal tour by boat a naturalist will point out an array of wildlife from birds to monkeys to crocodiles. Later we continue to explore on land during a hike on one of the many trails in the area.

Puerto Viejo de Salamanca - Cariblue Lodge (3 nights)

Day 6 (B, D)
A scenic drive down the Caribbean coast line takes us to an area of Costa Rica that hasn’t reached the height of commercialism that some other parts of the country have – the South Caribbean.

This area has a country-unique combination of non-commercial beaches, natural resources and an Afro-Caribbean culture that gives it an atmosphere different than any other part of the country.

On the way we stop at the only Sloth Sanctuary in the world and learn about these unique animals that spend most of their lives in tree tops, only coming down every week or two. We board canoes and move silently through the fresh water river at the Avarios del Caribe wildlife sanctuary.

Our palm-thatched bungalows nestled in the forest are located a short walk from a wide, sandy beach where surfers can be spotted waiting to catch a wave.

Day 7 (B, D)
To the southwest, the Talamanca region protects the largest population of indigenous people that remain in the country, the Bribris and Cabecars. It is also where the highest point of Costa Rica is located, the Cerro Chirripó (3.819 meters) Today we will be welcomed at a Bribri community accompanied by a local specialist who is an expert in the Talamanca indigenous culture.

He will explain how the indigenous communities are divided, their dialects, and the daily struggle to preserve their culture and their farming methods. While there we will visit the school, share time with the children, and have the opportunity to learn about the teaching system in relation to their culture.

Day 8 (B)
Today is free to walk the beach, watch the surfers, relax at the hotel, or explore the small shops in Puerto Viejo.

Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui – Hotel Bambu (2 nights)

Day 9 (B, D)
Traveling north we reach the North Plains region which includes Sarapiqui and Arenal. Our hotel is located in the heart of yet another town called “Puerto Viejo”. This is a typical river community surrounded by forests, small farms and agricultural plantations.

Tonight’s dinner is at a local restaurant.

Day 10 (B, D)
Enjoy a morning visit to La Selva Biological Station for a 2 to 3 hour hike through the lush primary and secondary rainforest located inside this privately funded research station. Learn about the efforts being made to protect this area of over 500 acres.

Arrangements have been made to visit a local farm family in their home and experience true “tico” hospitality. They will speak about their livelihood, family, history and community. We will then be taken on a walk about the small farm, followed by refreshments prepared just for us.

Arenal Volcano – Arenal Paraiso Hotel (3 nights)

Day 11 (B, D)
This morning we visit the largest organic pineapple farm in the world featuring state of the art equipment and facilities. The view of miles and miles of pineapple fields is impressive in itself. Our tour takes us out into the 3000 acres of pineapple fields to learn about the growing and harvesting process, and then return to see the processing and packing process.

Day 12 (B)
Today is free to enjoy your beautiful resort, go zip-lining on the canopy tour at the hotel, or take an optional hike up the Arenal Volcano.

Day 13 (B, D)
Costa Rica is famous for its hanging bridges which give people a birds eye view of nature without disturbing the environment. We start the day on a 3 kilometer walk high above tree tops and ravines on a series of 14 sturdy hanging bridges – some up to 100 meters long.

This afternoon experience another Costa Rica “must do” – a visit to a Butterfly Farm.

Tonight prior to dinner enjoy the warmth of the Ecotermales Hot Springs, a series of cascading pools that go from hot to mild. Dinner is located at the same location.
