- Known as the Pearl of the Antilles, Cuba is the largest and least commercialized island in the Caribbean, and the 15th largest island in the world. It is approximately 110,000 sq. kms. (about the size of Bulgaria).
- Population: Approximately 11 million people (2.2 million in the capital, Havana)
- Climate: A pleasant subtropical climate with temperatures ranging from 27.4 degrees (Celcius) in July and August and 22.2 degrees (Celcius) in February. Rainy season: May to October.
- Language: Spanish. English and other languages spoken in tourist resorts.
- Government: Socialist Republic
- Religion: Freedom of religion.
- Main industry and resources: sugar, tobacco, nickel, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and tourism.
- Health: Cuba's public health system is considered the best in Latin America. Infant mortality among the lowest in the world. Life expectancy: 75 years.
- Education: Free public education system from preschool to university. Present literacy rate: 94.5%
